There are a variety of start points and routes up Roseberry Topping:
If arriving at Great Ayton by train, cross the railway bridge, and follow the road ahead to start at serial 10.
If parking at Newton under Roseberry, head south passed the Kings Head Inn towards Great Ayton and turn left onto Roseberry Lane to start at serial 1.

01 0.00 miles NZ 570 128 This route stats at the Roseberry Topping public car park and picnic site on the A173 south of Newton under Roseberry. Follow the tarmac path from the toilet block and after about 150 yards, turn right up Roseberry Lane.
02 600 yards NZ 574 127 Climb the steps at the end of the lane and enter Newton Wood through the kissing gate. Turn immediately left to follow the bottom edge of the woods.
03 750 yards NZ 575 128 At the next signposted junction, turn right up the stepped path and continue all the way to the top of Roseberry Topping.
04 0.75 miles NZ 579 126 From Roseberry Topping, head west follow the Cleveland Way to head down along the spine of the Topping, descend the steps and continue across Roseberry Common and up the side of Little Roseberry.
05 1.25 miles NZ 587 127 Go through the gate and bear right (along the Cleveland Way), with a wall on your right, following the north east edge of Stacks Wood. The track bears slightly right to head south, and along the eastern edge of High Intake Plantation as the path skirts Great Ayton Moor. At the end a set of steps to meet a road Dikes Lane.
06 2.5 miles NZ 592 130 Go down the steps to the road and Gribdale Gate car park. Turn right and then immediately left up the forest track (signposted ‘Cleveland Way, Kildale’). Follow the Cleveland Way through a wooded area of Little Ayton Moor, then over Easby Moor to Captain Scott's Monument.
07 3.25 miles NZ 580 101 From the monument turn right, and follow the path through old stone gateposts. At the fork, bear left and follow the path steeply down into the Ayton Bank Woods, after crossing a track, the path bears left to anouhter junction.
08 3.75 miles NZ 583 103 Turn right and follow the bridleway, after passing a track on the left, the path bears right and meets with a road, Dikes Lane.
09 4.25 miles NZ 576 109 At the crossroads with Dikes Lane, cross the lane and continue ahead, up Aireyholme Lane to where a path appears on the left.
10 4.5 miles NZ 579 112 Turn left at the public footpath, cross the stile and walk across the field. Then head through the gate into Cliff Ridge Wood, pass through the wood to a track junction. Shortly after the junction pass the remnants of old metal gates (at a National Trust sign), continue straight on through to the end of Cliff Ridge Wood to a track junction.
11 5.25 miles NZ 567 118 At the path junction, turn sharp right, at the fork bear left with a clear view over the fields. At the next fork bear left again heading slightly downhill, for about 100 yards to another fork where there is a flat triangular shaped rock, bear left, and follow the path through Newton Wood, arriving back at serial 02.
12 6.25 miles NZ 574 127 Turn left down Roseberry Lane and back to the car park from where the walk started.
